The Complete Benelli M4 Upgrade Guide: Every Part Worth Considering (and Why)
Share
The Benelli M4 is one of the most reliable semi-auto shotguns ever built, but straight out of the box it leaves plenty of room to make it faster to load, easier to run, and better suited to how you actually shoot. Whether you want more capacity, a better stock setup, a weapon light, or a red dot, this guide walks through every upgrade we carry at Shell Tactical, what each one does, and who it's for.
A quick note on 922(r): many of the parts below are made in the USA and count toward 922(r) compliance, which matters if you're adding restricted features like a collapsible stock or extra magazine capacity to a M4. If you're new to the topic, start with our About 922(r) page before you build.

Magazine and Capacity Upgrades
Benelli M4 Wolff Magazine Spring

The magazine spring is the part that gets asked to do the most work and gets the least attention. A fresh Wolff spring gives you consistent, confident feeding from a full tube down to the last shell, and it's the first thing we recommend pairing with any capacity upgrade. It's inexpensive insurance for a defensive or competition gun, and it's available as a single or a 4-pack so you can keep spares on hand.

Benelli M4 Follower

Our CNC-machined aluminum follower replaces the factory part with a flat-face design for smoother feeding and a "USA" engraving you can feel with your thumb to confirm an empty tube. The Standard version keeps OEM-like geometry, while the Max Room version frees up extra internal space so you have a better chance of fitting a full 7 rounds of longer roll-crimped shells. It comes in eight colors and is one of the easiest, lowest-cost ways to add a 922(r) part.
Benelli M4 Magazine Extension +2 Round

If your M4 came with the 5-round tube, this extension threads onto your existing tube and brings you up to 7 rounds without a full tube replacement. It's the quickest path to more capacity and a great fit for owners who want a simple bolt-on upgrade. Pair it with a Wolff spring for the most reliable feeding.

Benelli M4 Magazine Tube, 7 Round

This is the clean, permanent route to 7 rounds. One full-length tube replaces both the factory tube and the limiter, giving you a sleeker profile than a bolt-on extension. The titanium version weighs just 5.4 oz, about 5 oz lighter than the OEM tube and limiter combined, which makes the front of the gun noticeably livelier. The steel version is engraved "MADE IN USA" and costs less. Both count toward 922(r), and both come in multiple finishes.

Benelli M4 Magazine Tube, 5 Round

Not every build needs a full-length tube. Our 5-round tube is the right choice for short-barreled builds or anyone who wants a compact profile while swapping in a US-made part for 922(r) purposes. It also pairs with our Extended Magazine Cap if you want to add capacity to a shorter setup later.

Benelli M4 Titanium Magazine Cap

Our titanium magazine cap is lighter than the factory polymer cap and, when run without the factory spring retaining ring, adds just over half an inch of internal tube space. That extra room is a big help if you're struggling to fit a full 7 rounds of longer defensive shells. Its profile blends classic Benelli styling with the rifled grooves of a 12-gauge slug, and it's available in Black, H2O, Midnight Bronze, FDE, and Raw Ti.

Benelli M4 Extended Magazine Cap, +1 or +3

Already maxed out your 7-round tube? This titanium cap replaces the factory cap and extends past the muzzle to add capacity with no tools, no heat gun, and no permanent modifications. The +1 version takes a standard M4 to 8 rounds in the tube, and the +3 version takes it to 10. On a 5-round short-barreled setup, the same caps give you 6 or 8. The correct longer spring is included.

Stocks and Recoil Upgrades
Benelli M4 Recoil Tube, 6-Position

The factory recoil tube gives you three length-of-pull settings. Ours gives you six, spaced 0.75" apart from 9.25" to 14.25", so you can dial in a fit for your build, your gear, and body armor. It's also the fix for civilian M1014 owners whose "collapsible" stock ships locked at full extension. Built from steel with a black nitride finish, it arrives with the retaining ring pre-installed and engraved position markers, and it's backed by a lifetime warranty.

Benelli M4 Retaining Ring for Recoil Tube

This small ring keeps the plunger in your recoil tube where it belongs, and it's easy to lose or damage during a stock swap or tube install. Keep a spare on hand so a tiny part never sidelines your shotgun.

Benelli M4 Collapsible Stock

The collapsible stock is the classic M4 look and one of the most practical upgrades you can make. It lets you shorten the gun for storage, transport, or close-quarters work and extend it for comfortable shooting. Combined with our 6-position recoil tube, you get even more adjustment than the factory setup offers. Be sure to confirm your 922(r) parts count before installing.

Benelli M4 Mesa Stocks

Mesa Tactical's Urbino stock gives your M4 a fixed pistol-grip stock with excellent cheek weld and a solid, stable feel. It's a great choice for shooters who want a consistent length of pull every time and the option to add on-stock shell storage.

Benelli M4 Shell Holder for Mesa Stock

If you run a Mesa stock, this shell holder adds extra rounds right on the stock, keeping reloads within easy reach without adding bulk to the receiver. It's an easy way to carry more ammunition on the gun itself.

Benelli M4 Limbsaver Recoil Pad

The M4's gas system already tames recoil well, but a Limbsaver pad takes the edge off even more. It's a comfortable upgrade for long range days, heavy slug and buckshot loads, and it helps the stock stay planted in your shoulder.

Bolt and Control Upgrades
Benelli M4 Charging Handle

The factory charging handle is roughly .25" in diameter and can be hard to grab quickly. Ours comes in .5" and .75" diameters with a knurled grip for faster, more positive charging, even with gloves. Choose titanium for weight savings (the 1/2" titanium handle is actually lighter than the OEM part) or hardened chromoly steel for maximum durability. Installation takes seconds with no modifications.

Benelli M4 Bolt Release Tab

The factory bolt release is small and easy to miss under stress. Our bolt release tab gives you a larger, easier-to-find surface so you can send the bolt home quickly during reloads. It's an affordable upgrade that makes a real difference in how smoothly the gun runs.

Benelli M4 Bolt Release Pad

For shooters who want an even bigger target, this oversized bolt release pad makes the control easy to hit with your support hand from nearly any grip. It's a favorite among competition and training-focused shooters who want the fastest possible reloads.

Benelli M4 Safety

An upgraded safety gives you a more positive, easier-to-feel control so you can confidently manipulate it without breaking your grip. Since it's installed during trigger disassembly, it's a smart add-on when you're already installing a trigger guard, trigger group, or extended carrier.
Trigger Upgrades
Benelli M4 Trigger Guard

The factory polymer trigger guard just holds the trigger. Our billet aluminum trigger guard adds an integrated shell loading ramp with an enlarged loading area that makes single and double loading noticeably faster. It's CNC machined in the USA, counts as a 922(r) part, and comes in black hard anodize or H2O NP3. It also fits the M1014 and MAC 1014, and it's covered by a lifetime warranty.

Benelli M4 Trigger Group

The factory trigger pull runs around 8 lbs. Our hammer, trigger, and disconnector kit brings that down to about 5 lbs for a cleaner, more controllable pull. The parts are made from heat-treated tool steel with an NP3 coating, and the kit adds three 922(r) compliant parts in one install.

Benelli M4 Extended Carrier

If you've ever pinched your thumb loading an M4 (the infamous "Benelli thumb"), this is your fix. The Taran Tactical AccuGuide Extended Carrier uses guide rails on both sides to center shells into the loading port, speeding up reloads and eliminating thumb bite, even with gloves. It's manufactured from a single piece of 304 stainless steel and has been proven at events like the 3-Gun Nationals.

Benelli M4 Trigger Carrier Washer

This spring washer is used in the M4's polymer trigger housing, and it's one of those small parts that's easy to lose during a trigger job. Grab a single or a five-pack so you're never stuck mid-install.

Side Saddles and Optic Mounts
Benelli M4 Side Saddle

A side saddle keeps extra shells right on the receiver, where they're fastest to reach for a reload or a quick slug select. Mesa Tactical's design uses a rubber friction retention system that holds shells firmly until you need them, and it bolts on using the receiver's existing screw holes.

Benelli M4 RMR Mount and Side Saddle

This combination piece puts a red dot mount and a side saddle into one unit, so you get fast target acquisition and on-gun ammo without stacking separate parts. It's built for optics with the RMR footprint and sits low for a natural sight picture.

Benelli M4 ACRO Mount and Side Saddle

Running an Aimpoint ACRO? This Mesa Tactical combo mounts your enclosed-emitter dot and holds six shells in one piece. It's CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum with a hard coat anodized finish to match your receiver, and it installs using the factory screw holes with no modifications. Choose all-aluminum or an aluminum and polymer version.

Benelli M4 Scalarworks Optic Mount

If you'd rather keep your red dot separate from your shell carrier, the Scalarworks mount is a lightweight, low-profile way to put an optic on the M4's top rail. Scalarworks is known for strong, minimalist mounts that hold zero, and this one gives you a clean, rigid platform for fast shotgun sighting.

Handguards and Forends
Benelli M4 Handguard

The Midwest Industries M-LOK handguard is one of the most popular upgrades on the platform. With 35 M-LOK slots across 7 rows, you can mount lights, lasers, grips, hand stops, and QD sling points without a separate mount, and it lets you extend your support arm into a more modern grip. It weighs only 8.7 oz installed, is 100% made in the USA, counts as a 922(r) part, and comes in Black or H2O NP3.
Benelli M4 Forend

Mesa Tactical's forend is a great middle ground for shooters who want to replace the factory polymer forend with something that adds mounting options while keeping a slimmer, classic profile. It gives you a more secure grip surface and room to add accessories as your build grows.
Weapon Lights and Mounts
Benelli M4 Light Mount

A weapon light is essential on any home defense shotgun. The IWC light mount gives you a solid, dedicated place to mount a Scout-style light on your M4, positioned for easy activation with your support hand.

Already running the IWC mount? These add-ons let you fine-tune it. The Picatinny rail section accepts picatinny-footprint lights, the Pro adapter fits a SureFire Scout Light PRO, the extender pushes your light forward up to 2.5 inches, and the stackable spacer kit clears larger handguards.

Olight Odin S M-LOK or Scout Mounted Weapon Light

The Olight Odin S is a compact, bright weapon light that's an excellent match for the M4. Choose the M-LOK version for handguard setups or the Scout mount version for use with a dedicated light mount, and you'll have a complete lighting solution ready to go.

Tools
Benelli M4 Snap Ring Pliers

Several M4 upgrades, including the trigger guard and handguard, involve snap rings that are frustrating to remove without the right tool. These pliers make installs faster and help you avoid scratched parts and lost rings.

Where to Start
If you're not sure where to begin, pick the goal that matters most to you and build from there. Most M4 upgrades fall into a few main categories.
Faster controls. The factory controls are small and easy to fumble under stress. A Charging Handle gives you a bigger, knurled grip for faster bolt manipulation, a Bolt Release Tab makes sending the bolt home quick and positive, and an Extended Carrier ends thumb pinch so you can load faster, even with gloves.
Magazine capacity. Get every round the platform allows. A 7-Round Magazine Tube gives you full capacity with a clean profile, the Max Room Follower and Titanium Magazine Cap free up internal space for longer shells, and a Wolff Magazine Spring keeps feeding reliable from the first shell to the last.
Optic and light mounting. Seeing your target matters as much as hitting it. An M-LOK Handguard opens up mounting space for lights, grips, and sling points, a Light Mount gives your weapon light a dedicated home, and an Optic Mount or a combination RMR or ACRO mount and side saddle puts a red dot on the gun for faster target acquisition.
Stock fit and comfort. A gun that fits you is a gun you shoot better. The 6-Position Recoil Tube doubles your length-of-pull options, a Collapsible Stock or Mesa Stock lets you choose between adjustability and a fixed cheek weld, and a Limbsaver Recoil Pad softens recoil on long range days.
Trigger and reloading. For the most refined feel, the Trigger Group drops pull weight from about 8 lbs to about 5 lbs, and the billet Trigger Guard adds a built-in loading ramp. Since both are installed during the same disassembly, they pair well with the Extended Carrier and Safety.
