Benelli M4 FAQ

Benelli M4 FAQ

Where is the Benelli M4 made?

The Benelli M4 is manufactured in Urbino, Italy by Benelli Armi S.p.A.

Why was the Benelli M4 created?

The Benelli M4 was designed for the US military’s request for a semi-automatic combat shotgun. The Benelli M1014 won the Joint Service Combat Shotgun Contract in 1998 and Benelli started production of the first 20,000 units for the US military.

How durable is the Benelli M4?

Testing has proven that the Benelli M4 will last over 25,000 rounds without replacing any major parts when using standard ammunition.

How reliable is the Benelli M4?

The Benelli M4 is one of the most, if not the most, reliable semi-automatic shotgun on the market. It is trusted by Law Enforcement and Miliary around the world.

What ammunition can the Benelli M4 shoot?

The Benelli M4 is only manufactured in 12 gauge. It can shoot up to 3” 12-gauge shells, but 2.75” is most commonly used. It can shoot anything from bird shot to rifled slugs (not sabot slugs unless they are designed for smooth bore barrels like to Benelli M4). Most less lethal/non-lethal rounds wont cycle in the Benelli M4 without manually cocking the charging handle each round.

Can the Benelli M4 be used for Hunting?

The Benelli M4 can be used for close range hunting because of its long barrel length (18.5”) for a tactical shogun. It is a great gun for self-protection when going on hikes that have prey animals around.

Will the Benelli M4 work for home defense?

Yes, the Benelli M4 is perfect for home defense. It has heavy stopping power, great reliability, and a short overall length. Just be sure to pair it with the right ammunition.

How much does the Benelli M4 Weigh?

It depends on the model and attachments, but it usually falls between 7.5 and 8.5 pounds.

Does the Benelli M4 have a lot of recoil?

No, the Benelli M4 has very light recoil compared to other 12-guage shotguns. This is because it has a recoil tube that absorbs a lot of the recoil, and the weight of the shotgun helps reduce recoil. The Upgraded Limb Saver Benelli M4 recoil pad helps to reduce some of the recoil further.

Is the Benelli M4 easy to disassemble and reassemble?

Yes, the Benelli M4 was specifically designed to be able to field strip in under 60 seconds without any tools.

What options are there for the Benelli M4 stocks?

There are 4 factory stock options for the Benelli M4

  • Pistol Grip Stock: is a fixed length polymer stock that has a pistol grip. This is the most common option.
  • Field Stock: Is a fixed length polymer stock that this doesn’t have a pistol grip. Also call the straight stock.
  • Collapsible stock: Is the classic M1014 Aluminum stock that telescopes. Also called the ‘Skeletonized stock’
  • Polymer collapsible stock: Uses a different style recoil tube than the M1014 stock. It adjusts by sliding without rotating. It is often referred to as the European style collapsible stock and recoil tube.

What is 922r compliance for the Benelli M4?

It is a federal law that involves imported shotguns and rifles. It limits citizens from increasing magazine capacity to over 5 rounds and/or having a stock that adjusts to different lengths of pull. There are ways around these restrictions. Click here to learn more.

Why does Benelli M4 come with a magazine limiter?

On civilian model Benelli M4s, the magazine is limited to 5 rounds because Benelli Italy has to conform to 922r laws if they want to sell Benelli M4s to American citizens. Once your Benelli is 922r compliant, you can add a Benelli M4 extension tube to make your shotgun hold 7 rounds in the magazine.

Why does the Benelli M1014/M4 come with a stock that doesn’t collapse?

On civilian model Benelli M1014s, the ‘collapsible stock’ is installed on a recoil tube that only has 1 position and doesn’t allow the collapsible stock to collapse to a shorter length of pull. This is because Benelli Italy has to conform to 922r laws if they want to import and sell Benelli M4s to American citizens. Once your Benelli is 922r compliant, you can add a Benelli M4 recoil tube that has multiple positions to adjust length of pull.

What is the capacity of the Benelli M4?

The Benelli M4 comes out of the box with 5+1 capacity but it can be upgraded to 7+1 capacity for 2-3/4” shells. With 3” shells the capacity is 4+1 with the limited magazine or 6+1 with an extension tube.

Why won’t 7 rounds fit into my Benelli M4 magazine?

The most common reason is that your 2.75” shells are too long. Some 2-3/4” shells are longer than others. Target loads tend to be shorter than defensive loads when you compare them side by side. The 2.75” measurement is the length of the shells when the crimped walls are straightened out (after firing or before loading at the factory).

What is the Benelli M4 ARGO system?

The ARGO (Auto-Regulating Gas Operated) system was specifically designed for the Benelli M4 in 1998. The ARGO system is a twin piston, gas operated system that automatically regulates pressure based on the power of the round being fired. This way, it can reliably cycle nearly any round without the need to adjust the gas system. It is a simple, self-cleaning system that made the Benelli M4 trusted and implemented by military entities world-wide.
